"I purchased this book with the assumption that it would be in good condition. It was nothing like the description; the front cover is ripped with 10 of the pages that the words are unrecognizable because of the major tear throughout half of the book, blood stains on the side, and bite marks on two corners of the entire book. It's completely unacceptable."

- Get this book!
If you're an applied individual getting an education to do a job the best you can, you should no doubt buy, and keep, this book.
If you're really just checking credits off a box on your way to a degree that you may not have even picket yet, at least rent it.
Don't go without it! As a college graduate who has returned to school after several years in the work force, the college book game is not something I'm new to. Nor a particular fan of. But this isn't about me, it's about you.
You've just signed up for you classes and you're looking at that dreaded list of "required materials". And so you start to hear those voices talking about how "This class you don't really need the book" or "I bought that book and never opened it once". Now whether you are hoping to slim down that costly list, or you're the type of person that reads the word "required" as "required" and plan to buy all the books, whoever you are when you step up to the counter should be someone with this book in hand.
I'll address several questions you may have; Do I absolutely need this book, what if it isn't required but only recommended? If so, does it matter if I buy or rent the book? And finally, what's so great about this book.
Do I really need this book? Yes. If you're majoring in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, or even as any type educator or of healthcare provider (speaking as a Paramedic with 6+ years of service, you need this book. You will read this book more than your assigned, and after the semester ends.
As for just this class..
Every professory is defferent, but if they're using this book, even if it is only recommended, treat it as a requirement. There's a good chance they plan to seriously educate you on the foundations and aspects of Anthropology. I don't know if you could get by without it, but I know having it makes it near-impossible to not pass the class. It truly does cover everything you need to know in clear way that allow you to easily navigate the "highlights" of a topic and the "in-depth" information as well. It's key words, and objectives laid out at the start of each chapter are very accurate to the crucial terms. I can't see anyone passing an Anthropology course without this book, nor failing with it; it contains everything needed to know even more than enough to pass any entry level Anthropology course.
Rent or Buy For once, I'm going to strongly recommend buy. I myself rented it, and will be purchasing it at the end of the semester. After seeing the way that the book is laid out, the information covered and the formatting of such information, I have no doubt that this book will remain a reference book on my shelf for years to come as I, or anyone, continues through the studies and work in psychology/sociology/criminology/anthropology/social work and healthcare. - This is without a doubt the MOST CONCISE introductory anthropology textbook I have ever seen. That, in itself, makes it worthy of four stars. It would have gotten five stars if it had been better edited because there is STILL a lot of excess verbiage in this book. Dr. Kottak is an interesting fellow, and his research sounds like it has contributed some very important anthropological findings to the field, BUT he has a habit of throwing it bits of information about his work where the info is neither relevant nor helpful. Also, some of the most important concepts are given short shrift while the most minimally important topics are given PAGES. It can make sorting the relative importance of topics rather difficult, not to mention the problems of understanding the important topics that have been glossed over in 2-3 sentences as if everyone should already know them. That said, the book is easy to read, and I LOVE that I could rent it at such a reasonable cost.
- This is an interesting and easy textbook to read and follow. The chapters are layed out in a way that it builds on each area that you have already read, so it helps you understand and retain the information that you are learning. It includes real life examples within the text, which always help you relate the information.
- I purchased this book with the assumption that it would be in good condition. It was nothing like the description; the front cover is ripped with 10 of the pages that the words are unrecognizable because of the major tear throughout half of the book, blood stains on the side, and bite marks on two corners of the entire book. It's completely unacceptable.
- It was just as described, and the price was right.
- The most I like it was available for rent, and I was able to understand the book better than the professor. What I like least was the chapters were crazy long with alot of repetitive material.
- Very informative
- Interesting that it was left in "residence's mailbox" since I do not have a mailbox! Thankfully, I have honest neighbors and live in a decent neighborhood!
